Stories and Stewardship a Success at Giant Rock

With the help of #storiesandstewardship cleanup event volunteers and the Bureau of Land Management, our vortex is 285 pounds of litter lighter!

The magnetic pick up tools from BLM and Harbor Freight made quick work of collecting nails. Volunteer Daniel Woodman pointed out there are approximately 72 nails in a wooden pallet – a commonly burned item in camp fires at Giant Rock. We collected 66.4 pounds of metal hardware from fire sites.

Other waste removed: broken glass, beverage containers, firework debris, shot gun shells, large metal objects and a TV.

We engaged a few young on-site campers to help as they had no idea about the history of Giant Rock and the stories of Frank Critzer and George Van Tassel.

Afterwards we adapted pizza from $5 Dollar Pizza Place in Landers into sandwiches stuffed with arugula. Thanks Michael for the generous discount and delivery!

Thank you to everyone who came out and to the Yucca Valley, CA Home Depot for providing bags and buckets for the 2017’s Giant Rock Cleanup #2.
